Isamu Noguchi - Akari BB3-5DD
The floor lamp Akari BB3-55DD is constructed by hand from shoji paper and has a steel drum frame. The naturally rounded fixture is supported by a black cast iron base and a bamboo stem. The height of the Akari BB3-55DD is 185 cm. This globe-shaped floor lamp complements other circular Akari models and adds a three-dimensional impression to spaces.
Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese American sculptor, architect, and designer, created the Akari line of luminaires in 1951. Noguchi's designs were to have a significant impact on 1950s design, and his work is artistically associated with abstract expressionism.
Noguchi drew inspiration for the Akari line of lights from traditional Japanese design. The collection includes floor, table, and ceiling lamps and has a total of over 100 luminaires. Shoji paper, which is derived from mulberry tree bark, is used to create all Noguchi light sculptures. The substance gives off a subtle yet evocative glow.

More about the designer:
In 1951 the Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi began to design the Akari Light Sculptures, a group of works handcrafted out of shoji paper that eventually comprised over 100 luminaires – table, floor and ceiling lamps. He chose the name ‚akari‘ for these objects, a word that means ‚light‘ in Japanese, connoting both illumination and physical lightness. ‚The light of Akari is like the light of the sun filtered through the paper of shoji. The harshness of electricity is thus transformed through the magic of paper back to the light of our origin – the sun – so that its warmth may continue to fill our rooms at night.‘
