Charlotte Perriand for Cassina | Tabouret Berger
The stool 524 Tabouret Berger Walnut was designed by Charlotte Perriand for Cassina in 1961. The stool is made of solid wood. The three twisted legs characterize Perriand's design. The 524 Tabouret Berger Walnut is both timeless and classic and works just as well alone as it does together with the higher variant in the same series, Maribél. It can also be used as a small coffee table or sideboard.
Charlotte Perriand's design was inspired by simple mountain interiors and the type of stool used to milk cows. She is considered one of the most influential modernist designers ever. The elegant design is as relevant today as it was then.
More about the design:
Both tabouret pieces are inspired by the mountains. While the latter takes its name from the milking-stool used by alpine shepherds, the former is inspired by the French locality much loved by designer and architect Charlotte Perriand. These furnishing accessories stand out for the honesty of their simple shapes and for the concrete expression of their materials and function. The turned seat meets the stylised legs both in the Tabouret Berger, a lower version with three legs in handturned solid wood, and in the taller Tabouret Méribel, which has three angular legs. Produced by Cassina thanks to a meticulous work of craftsmanship that respects the authenticity of the original design, these small masterpieces can be used on their own or in creative compositions. The use of solid wood communicates a pleasant sense of softness, and we see the continuity of the grain right the way across the seat to the borders, nature creating a unique pattern on each.
More about the designer:
Charlotte Perriand was born in Paris in 1903 and was a renowned French architect and designer. She was educated at the Ecole de L'Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs. When Charlotte was 24, she designed the Bar Under the Roof installation, a built-in curved bar with accompanying chairs for the Salon d'Automne.
The installation was a sensation and led to her being accepted by Le Corbusier. Together they began a collaboration with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret that would last for over a decade. The three worked together in a large design studio at 35, Rue de Sèvres in Paris. The design trio created the classics LC1, LC2 and LC7, among others. Perriand also created masterpieces of her own, such as the Tokyo Outdoor lounger and the 520 Accordo coffee table.
Today, Charlotte Perriand is recognised as one of the most influential modernist designers in the world and Italian Cassina has exclusive rights to produce her work. These include the Tabouret Méribel stools, the Nuage shelf and the 527 Mexique table. In the post-war period, Perriand turned her attention to architecture, but her furniture design is considered as relevant today as it was 80 years ago. She was a self-assured person who paved the way for women in male-dominated industries such as design, interior design and architecture.
